Round Up Of 2018

Spring Meeting - Scotsman Trophy

22nd March 2018 / Stockport

A great golf course to start off the season matched by some excellent scoring on the day and some decent weather albeit a little chilly. Number weren't great but those that did attend had a great time on a course that was very well presented for late March. Our winner on the day Mark Johnston had an impressive 38 points just pipping Peter Stephenson by a point and Cooky by 2 points. Fourth place went to the mercurial Mike Massey on 35 points. Past Captains Jim Sinclair Smith, Billy Howard and even the scribe himself Bob Bolton were propping up the results with Bob only managing a measly 19points. As this is the first half of the NABS trophy and Edward Bates its going to be a long way back for that trio!

Autumn Meeting - John Cartwright Trophy

11th October 2018 / Wilmslow GC

The season finale at the magnificent Wilmslow Golf Club didn't let us down with the course looking in splendid condition complete with autumn hues. The John Cartwright trophy has been completely restored following breakage last year and looks like a new trophy. We were fortunate to have Tony Wedd on hand to present it to the latest recipient our very own Ian Cook. Cooky delayed the prize presentation whilst he found a suitable place to leave his mask and sombrero and feed his horse. On a day of respectable scoring his 43 points off 21 handicap was outstanding and only guest and friend of our Society, David May managed to make it into the rarified atmosphere of 40 points plus with a 41 off 8 handicap.

Results:

  • Winner: Ian Cook 21 handicap 43 points

  • 2nd place: Jaz Singh 13 handicap 37 points

  • 3rd place: Bob Morritt 18 handicap 36 points (card play off)

  • Guest prize: David May 8 handicap 41 points

  • Front 9 Jeremy Palmer 21 points Back 9 Rob Axon 19 points

  • Nearest pin 9th Captain Colin Axon 17th hole Ibi Saleem

The NABS trophy

Awarded for the aggregate score of spring and autumn meetings, saw a clear winner in Ian Cook with 36 points from Spring to add to his 43 today. Steve O'Brien and Jaz Singh shared second place with 67 points.

The Edward Bates trophy

The aggregate score of Spring and Autumn meetings for past captains. There were only a few contesting this year and it was immediate past captain Declan McKenna who came out victorious with 60 points followed by Ken Buckley on 57.

Bob Bolton

Bob is a long standing member of MAGS and spent many years as scribe as well as editor of the old website. On the rare occasion he’s not swimming, he enjoys playing golf in an aggression manner. He loves to rip driver as hard as possible (surprisingly straight) and he struggles on and around the greens… this may be the understatement of the year. The combination of long straight drives and dodgy short game evens out to make him a very dangerous mid handicap golfer.
