Round Up Of 2016

The Scotsman Trophy

Thursday 17th March 2016 / Stockport G.C.

Sponsors - Bob Bolton Barton Grange Advertising

First meet of the year and a magnificent spring day presented itself to usher in the new season. Captain Billy has obviously been praying to the same weather gods as his predecessor Mike Williams. However the rigours of a wet winter have taken their toll over the Stockport course and it wasn't quite up to its usual emaculate standard. No doubt with some drier conditions it will soon be back to its best. Our first meet coincided with St Patrick's day, a fact that didn't escape our Captain, Mr Billy (now known as) O'Howard. Having played at the front of the field with none other than Declan (sounds Irish) McKenna, they hit the bar early and between them proceeded to attempt resolution of the Irish trade deficit by consuming indecent quantities of Guinness. For the assembled members and guests that made it through the incoherent ramblings of our Captains inaugural speech I can only reassure them that there are no other MAGS events scheduled to clash with Saints Days so we should be in the clear for the rest of the season - make sure he goes out last next time Ken!

Of course Billy would have been delighted that a 'fellow' Irishman won out on the day. I think we might have to apply a non Irish handicapping system for Declan in future as a 5 point winning margin of 41 points was considered by many (everyone except Declan) to be outrageous. Well done Deccy!

The Monty Milner Trophy

Wednesday 13th April 2016 / Romiley G.C.

Sponsors - Monty Milner, Ian Cook

Once again the weather gods shone at Romiley for our second meet of the year and first leg of the Spring and Autumn meetings for the ultimate prize of the NABS trophy. Today the magnificent caricature trophy of our esteemed former secretary Monty Milner was on offer, which guaranteed another excellent turn out of 50 golfers. Not unlike neighbouring Stockport GC, Romiley has suffered from the winter rains and was a little damp underfoot to say the least. However it didn't prevent some (but not much) good scoring on the day. We were extremely well looked after by our hosts once again but we were without our glorious leader Billy Howard. The pro's and con's of this position were that we wouldn't have to make sense of another potential drunken speech from Billy but that we might have had to endure another Mike Williams (who ably stood in for Billy) black box joke - If you haven't heard that one before you could listen to the podcast of the magistrates hearing where Mike is allegedly up for sexual and racial discrimination.

One incident of note involved Mike Bebbington and Ian Cook. Mike is fast approaching the age of having to retake his driving test. If his buggy handling is anything to go by, that date can't come soon enough. Before barely a ball was struck reverse gear was mistaken for forwards and Mike's buggy careered into Cooky's trolley rendering it unusable! Mike was subsequently presented with a new MAGS prize ( see pic below), which had it been Kens trolley it could have been known as the Ken Buckled Wheel trophy ......sigh!

Results:

  • Winner - Steve Fletcher (18) 36 points

  • Runner up - Ian Cook (19) 34 points

  • Guest prize - Rob Griffiths (13) 33 points

  • Best front 9 - Monty (I always have to win a prize on my day) Milner 18 points

  • Best back 9 - Toby Swire 18 points on a 'I was at the presentation' playoff 'and you weren't', from David Bolton

  • Nearest pin 2nd - Clive Kirkham

  • Nearest pin on 11th - Rick Sullivan.

Bob Bolton

Bob is a long standing member of MAGS and spent many years as scribe as well as editor of the old website. On the rare occasion he’s not swimming, he enjoys playing golf in an aggression manner. He loves to rip driver as hard as possible (surprisingly straight) and he struggles on and around the greens… this may be the understatement of the year. The combination of long straight drives and dodgy short game evens out to make him a very dangerous mid handicap golfer.
